Buying from a retiring owner

A retiring owner selling for succession reasons is often the most straightforward and human deal a first-time buyer can find.

Why These Deals Suit First-Time Buyers

A business being sold because the owner is retiring, rather than because it is in trouble, tends to have a more stable trading history, a genuine reason for sale that will hold up under scrutiny, and an owner who is motivated to see a smooth transition rather than to extract maximum value and disappear.

These deals are rarely the cheapest on the market, since a well-run business with a genuine succession story attracts interest, but they tend to be the most forgiving for a first-time buyer because the seller usually wants the business to keep thriving after they leave.
